How to Harness the Organic Matter of Your Fall Leaves
Fall leaves can be shredded to lighten heavy soil, help sandy soil retain moisture, feed earthworms and beneficial microbes, add trace minerals to the soil, protect tender plants over winter, and work as mulch in the spring to keep unwanted weeds down. All without chemicals or artificial dyes and it’s FREE!
Why would we pay to have an organic goldmine carted off and added to landfills?
Try this:
Run over your leaves with a lawn mower, collecting the shreds in the clippings bag. Add a 6-in layer of shredded leaves to your garden. Work it into the soil now, or in the spring, to improve your soil. Or just leave it on the top of your garden to act as mulch inhibiting weed growth.
Too tired to do anything with your leaf shreds this fall? Dump them into a compost area for use in the spring.
