Honeybees and Children
“Why not have the little ones use Legos to build an actual beehive?” I thought this would be an easy, non-threatening way to introduce my Pre-K and K students to pollinators. Well, the kiddos were thrilled to build the fully functioning hive – eventually home to 40,000 honeybees! They LOVE honey tastings and suiting up to check in on the bees periodically.
The children learned all the components that make up a beehive and learned about the various jobs of each of the bees living in the hive. The Lego hive was Salt Creek Butterfly Farm’s most prolific hive in its first summer of operation. We harvested 45 lbs. of honey for ourselves and left the bees with 60 lbs. to eat over the winter.
